There are numerous books on the market, and we suggest that you use the same criteria for judging the material as you would for considering therapies. A significant amount of research is now being carried out in this area of women's health; there will no doubt continue to be a flood of material. Know yourself and then judge.

Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, Christiane Northrup, Bantam Books, 1998.
This is a book that sees health as a very holistic process. There is a strong bias to rely on, and listen to, our own intuition.

Woman's Body – A Manual for Life, Miriam Stoppard, Canadian Medical Association, 1995.
Great visuals and informative text; a handy, easy-to-follow reference.

The New Our Bodies, Ourselves: The Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, Simon and Schuster, 1984.
The updated version of the classic 70s text. Excellent chapters on growing older and relationships other than married, heterosexual.

The Wellness Letter, University of California at Berkeley. PO Box 420148, Palm Coast, Florida 32142. This monthly newsletter is a wealth of up-to-date information covering a broad range of health topics.

Prevention Magazine, Rodale Press, California. This monthly booklet, available at supermarkets, provides articles and recommendations on a broad range of topics. A reliable source of herbal and alternative approaches to health.

A Friend Indeed, published by the Canadian Women’s Health Network, edited by June Rogers, Main Floor, 419 Graham Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 0M3.
This bi-monthly newsletter has been a godsend to many women over the last 10 years. It provides up-to-date information regarding perimenopause and menopause, as well as acting as a forum for information sharing.

Perimenopause, Changes in Women's Health after 35, J. Huston and D. Lanka, New Harbinger Publications, Oakland, 1997.
Straightforward explanations of all the processes surrounding this period. Well laid out and easy to read.

Menopausal Years: A Wise Woman's Ways, Susun Weed, Ash Tree Publishing, Woodstock, NY, 1992.
Probably the best book written about herbal remedies.

Stand Tall! The Informed Women's Guide to Preventing Osteoporosis, Morris Notelovitz and Marsha Ware, Triad Publishing, Florida, 1997. A good book on this subject by someone who is a well-respected researcher in this area.

Hysterectomy: Before and After, Winifred B. Cutler, Harper and Row, NY, 1988. Good science and good advice from a PhD researcher.

Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, Susan Love, Random House, New York, 1995.
This is considered to be the best publication on all aspects of breast health.

Dr. Susan Love’s Menopause and Hormone Book, Random House, New York, 2003. Contains very up-to-date information, lots of references and resources.

Menopause and Emotions, Lafern Page, Primavera Press, Vancouver, 1996.
Deals very effectively with this often overlooked aspect of the perimenopausal journey. May be available only from libraries.

The Greatest Experiment Ever Performed on Women: Exploding the Estrogen Myth, Barbara Seaman, 2003. A lively historical account of the early birth control pill and a scathing critique of the notion of hormone “replacement”.
