There are an increasing
number of opportunities to explore and expand our knowledge base
in this area. If there is nothing in your community, consider using
this manual and conducting your own small group. This manual is
available to assist that process.
Local branches of national organizations such as the Osteoporosis
Society of Canada, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Heart and Stroke
Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Society provide a wide range
of services relating to the relevant topic.
Most regions have screening mammogram clinics. Contact your local
public health bureau or the telephone book to locate the nearest
clinic.
Recreation centres, YWCAs, or women's organizations often conduct
regular exercise programs.
Local public health bureaus can often provide you with names of
dieticians and smoking-cessation programs.
Most large towns and cities have Tai Chi and yoga centres. Many
recreation centres and YWCAs also offer a range of relaxation and
stress-reducing courses or clinics.
Most towns and cities have women's organizations that frequently
offer courses and workshops on various topics relevant to this stage
of life. Community colleges are another good source of courses.
For rural areas, the Women's Institute has developed an excellent
course that can be presented in a self-help group format or with
a facilitator.
